The subtle tones of brown offer a comforting back drop for the harsh red tones and graphite pencil markings allowing the painting to sit in comfort. Rowell decided to move towards a more expressionist outcome within his art. There is a clear intention to focus on the use of colour in abstract form in order to gain a subtle sense of beauty. The lighter tones have an ability to calm the painting, to prevent the brown tones from sitting too far into the backdrop.
